MHS Key Club Caps Off Outstanding Year

In a normal, non-Covid year, 20 of the Mustang High School Key Club students attend the Texas-Oklahoma District Convention in Dallas called “LEDCON” short for Leadership Convention, at the end of April along with their sponsor, Ms. Trena Rogers. This convention has over 1100 Key Club members in attendance representing over 475 clubs in the Texas-Oklahoma district. The past two years have been a struggle to volunteer, to find opportunities for the students to give back in the community and school, but they have persevered and found a way. The last two years have been a virtual convention instead of in person but the rules for the possible 15 contests, awards and scholarships are still the same. Mustang has consistently been in the top 25 out of 475 clubs for the last 5 consecutive years, and strive each year to win additional awards.

This 2020-2021 school year the Key club earned 3 major awards which include:

  • Tex-O-Key Award, only 1 is awarded annually

  • Club Newsletter Award, 2nd place in the district

  • Ranked #19 in the Top 25 Clubs of the Texas-Oklahoma District

“I am so proud of the Key Club and all the hard work they do every year and the support that we get from the Kiwanis of Mustang,” said Rogers. “It is a pleasure and honor to work with these students, and watch leaders step up to do whatever needs to be done for our school, community and country, regardless of circumstance.”

Ms Trena Rogers, who has been the MHS Key Club advisor since 2018, was honored to represent our students on such a large platform.

“I realized the importance of teaching the club members responsibility, leadership skills, and the meaning of service,” said Rogers. “Our officers exhibit such strong leadership skills and encourage the club members to be involved, without these leaders the club would not be what it is today.”

The MHS Key Club has received numerous awards, Texas Oklahoma Kiwanis Foundation Key Club Scholarships, and actively contributes to several service projects throughout the community. Some of these projects include: the annual Kiwanis Club Pancake Supper and Duck Races, the MHS Food Pantry, participating at Harn Homestead, supporting Senior Bingo, donating to projects like the Thirst Project and the Red Cross, volunteering at the Regional Food Bank and many more. MHS Key Club fundraisers for students to participate in the yearly convention and to make the donations to the multitude of projects they have each school year.
