Riverwood Elementary School Kindness Garden Makes Aesthetic & Intrinsic Beautification
(Mustang, Oklahoma – August 20, 2021) – American journalist/author Anne Herbert once advised her readers to “practice random kindness and senseless acts of beauty.” Amanda Haney, a PreK teacher at Riverwood Elementary in Mustang, has brought to life a project which heeds that advice in the Riverwood Rocks Kindness Garden.
“[The idea for the garden] is something I had been thinking about for a while,” Haney said, “and I finally just pitched it to [my principal] Mrs. Hill.” After Haney was able to obtain administrative approval, she approached Minick Materials about donating rocks for more than seven hundred students, and they agreed and came through with more than twelve hundred pounds of rock for Riverwood. “It really became a community project at that point,” Haney continued. “Minick donated the rocks, our Parent-Teacher-Student-Organization donated funds to cover the already discounted delivery fee for Minick, and then our cafeteria manager’s family landscaping business, Pruett Brothers Lawn & Landscape, offered to “adopt the flowerbed” to revamp and maintain the area throughout the year.”
The work was all completed and the Riverwood Rocks Kindness Garden made its debut at Open House on Tuesday, August 10, a couple of days before school started. Students were encouraged to pick out and decorate a rock with their family and return it to the garden for all to see. “I have to thank Mrs. Hill,” Haney was overheard saying during Open House. “She embraced my idea as a teacher and encouraged me to reach out to make this aspiration a reality! She is a role model for the idea behind the garden itself - Believing in yourself, and as an educator [and] doing everything possible to support your peers. Now, our school will have a beautiful entrance that will be a continuous reminder to students, families, and all staff that each of us has a special place in this world and the capability to make it better every single day.”
Opened in the Fall of 2018, Riverwood Elementary is located at 11800 SW 44th Street just inside the city limits of Yukon, OK, but is a part of Mustang Public Schools.
