Mustang Aviation is a program for students attending Mustang High School who are interested in Oklahoma's newest economic driver: Aviation, Aerospace & Aeronautics. Students enrolled in our courses will have opportunities for hands-on career and industry experiences that will transform the traditional education environment to authentically connect student learning to high-tech industry readiness.

Already a national leader in the industry, Oklahoma has a critical demand for highly skilled and trained workforce, yet ranks near the bottom nationally in terms of STEAM education. This program provides industry-connected education pathways for Oklahoma students to connect directly with higher education, career tech, and industry partners, ensuring career readiness in the high-demand areas of aviation and aerospace.

Mustang Public Schools is inviting local businesses to invest in our students’ futures with no extra out-of-pocket cost.

Through LaunchOK: The STEM & Aerospace Education Fund, Mustang is tapping into a little-known state program that has existed since 2011 but has flown under the radar for many companies. The program allows businesses to redirect their Oklahoma state income tax liability into local schools. In return, they receive up to a 75% state tax credit, and in many cases, they can also treat the contribution as a business expense.

In other words, it’s not a donation. It’s a choice in where your tax dollars go, and Mustang businesses now have a direct path to support STEM education, classroom innovation, and workforce development.

At the Monthly Mustang Chamber of Commerce Luncheon on October 23 at the Mustang Town Center (11:30am), MPS/LaunchOK spotlighted how local students are preparing for high-demand aerospace and STEM careers, and will walk business leaders through the simple process of participating in LaunchOK, with the goal of strengthening the future workforce pipeline while benefiting from smart financial incentives. Launching into Aviation

Launching into Aviation:

This course will provide the foundation for advanced exploration in the areas of flying, aerospace engineering, and unmanned aircraft systems. Students will learn about engineering practices, problem solving, and the innovations and technological developments that have made today’s aviation and aerospace industries possible. Students will also learn about the wide variety of exciting and rewarding careers available to them. This course will inspire students to consider aviation and aerospace careers while laying the foundation for continued study.

Exploring Aviation and Aerospace

Exploring Aviation and Aerospace:

Exploring the regulatory and safety organizations and infrastructure that are essential to today’s aviation environment, students will define safety and examine concepts such as perceived and accepted risk before developing their own safety management systems. They’ll go on to investigate the role of regulation and oversight in creating and maintaining safety and efficiency within the aviation system and gain an understanding of the mission and responsibilities of the FAA. Later, students will consider the role of the National Transportation Safety Board and take an in-depth look at the accident investigation process as they take on the roles of various NTSB “Go Team” members in a simulated accident investigation. Finally, students will examine the government’s role in delivering weather information and the importance of weather reporting to aviation safety.

Introduction to Flight

Introduction to Flight:

In the Introduction to Flight Course, students pursuing the pilot and UAS tracks will take a closer look at the aircraft they may one day operate. Students will begin with an exploration of the types of aircraft in use today before going on to learn how aircraft are made and how they fly. Students will understand how aircraft are categorized, be able to identify their parts, and learn about aircraft construction techniques and materials. They will gain an in-depth understanding of the forces of flight—lift, weight, thrust, and drag—including how to make key calculations. They will then touch on aircraft design, looking at stability, aircraft controls, and maneuvering flight. The course will conclude with a focus on career skills related to these topics.

Aircraft Systems and Performance

Aircraft Systems and Performance:

In the Aircraft Systems and Performance course, students in the pilot and UAS tracks will take an in-depth look at the systems that make manned and unmanned aircraft work. Beginning with aircraft propulsion, students will learn about the different types of engines that produce thrust to propel an aircraft or UAS. They will go on to explore other key aircraft systems, including fuel, electrical, landing gear, and environmental. In order to fly an aircraft safely, students must also learn about the flight instruments associated with each system and how to identify and troubleshoot common problems. This unit also covers airplane flight manuals, the pilot’s operating handbook, and required aircraft documents. Finally, students will learn about the factors that affect aircraft performance and how to determine critical operating data for aircraft.
