Advanced Placement

Many of Mustang’s seniors are able to leave high school and start college at a sophomore level. In addition to concurrent enrollment, in which students can take classes for credit at several area colleges, Mustang High School also offers 16 Advanced Placement courses that could allow a student to earn college credit.

Advanced Placement courses are rigorous and require additional work outside the classroom. After the course is completed, students can sign up to take an exam over the material for a fee (exam fees are established annually by the College Board). Current testing fees and available financial assistance are provided during the registration process.
  • Test registration is done online in the spring, starting in January and through March 1.
  • The dates for AP exams are set by the College Board; Mustang Public Schools does not set testing dates.
Scoring for the tests ranges from 1 (low) to 5 (high). Colleges may grant college credit depending on the score, but individual requirements may vary.

Advantages of AP classes and testing include:

  • Better preparation for college

  • Preferential entry to selective colleges and possible advanced standing

  • Reduced college expenses

  • The students may earn a designation of AP Scholar at graduation and be recognized at an AP reception by scoring 3 or higher on at least 3 AP exams

Grade Scale for:

  • Accelerated Course (formerly Pre-AP) = .5 added to GPA

  • AP = 1 point added to GPA

Mustang offers the following AP classes: AP American History, AP Art History, AP Calculus, AP Chemistry, AP Computer Science, AP English III, AP English IV, AP Environmental Science, AP European History, AP Human Geography, AP Physics, AP Psychology, AP Government, AP Statistics, and AP Spanish Language.
